Lady L-Plater’s Golfing Journal
2-2-2010

In honour of this the second day of Spring I very courageously left off my waterproof over-trousers for this morning’s golf.  I did, however, have leggings on under my trousers along with 2 t-shirts, 1 polo-neck, 1 woolly jumper, 1 waterproof jacket and 1 voluminous ear-covering hat.  For this is an Irish Spring we are having and one doesn’t wish to get carried away, L-Plater or no.

At the 11a.m. draw I went out as one third of a 3-ball – the least experienced of the group as is currently usual.  In celebration of Spring the full greens were open for play.  For all the misery and discontent that we golfers suffer from the temporary greens during the harsh weather I discovered that the sacrifice is very worth it.  The full greens are immaculate – smooth, darkly coloured and in perfect condition.  My putting, however, completely ignored this but ‘twas still fine to see.  And the happy smiles of my co-players as their putts glided for 10, 20, 30 even 40 feet into the holes lit the world around us.

But I was inordinately chuffed to-day on not one but two entirely unworthy occasions:  One of my co-players was playing off a mighty 6 at the height of her game and, as a septuagenarian who looks not a day over 40, she still plays off a very respectable 14 and I outdrove her once.  Yes I did.  Not by much (a couple of feet at best) and it was her first time to play at Garryhinch since last October – but I nonetheless got to utter the words – “I think that’s you first” to her.  Mmmmmm lovely.

Occasion # 2 was perhaps a fraction less earth-shattering in its importance but still nice.  On one (yes, just the one) of the 9 holes we played today I got to drive off second – not third’n’last but second.  So I came in second on one of the holes.  I’m telling you – when the Golf-Bug bites he bites real hard and he hangs on in there for life.  Something to look forward to…
