Lady L-Plater’s Golfing Journal – Addition 3

Dum, Dum, Dum, De-De, Dum, Dum – Under Pressure

The glorious day of our Honourable St. Patrick (St. Paddy from now on) dawned with sun and no rain.  That is what the weatherman had forecast the night before, but I felt he was smiling in a nervous, “fingers-crossed” kinda way – more hopeful than definite.  But sure he was right, bless ‘im.

‘Twas a four-ball 14-Hole Scramble today and our pioneering team consisted of L-Plater H, her husband (& exemplary golfing gentleman) the Mc Man, The Buddy (my course baby-sitter) and me.  The working out of the handicaps was way beyond my mathematical capabilities (shoes off after 10) so I feigned nonchalance when informed that it was something and 3/7’s.  Indeed.

And away we went – the Mc Man had a cunning plan with a mere hint of superstition – we played each hole in an identical format to minimise bad luck.  Had I known the plan at Hole #1, I would not have driven off first.  But L-Plater H and I did well – on fairway and straight – day was looking real good so far…

2nd Hole – early for me to golf peak, but I carried on regardless.  The drive was mine, the chip was mine, the putt was mine.  Mine I tell you.  The 2nd shot that got my moderately dodgy drive into an infinitely chippable position was the Mc Man’s.  Good on ‘im.

The Mc Man’s final putt policy was testing for him though.  The 3-lipped putters had him emanating Queen & David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” whenever he held the putter in his hand.  “Dum, dum, dum, de-de, dum, dum”.  But his reads were more good than bad and he rescued us more than once.

17th was hard though – one ball to the left – just, one ball to the right – just, my ball took fright and jumped the hole and the birdie flew away.  “Dum, dum, dum, de-de, dum, dum”.

But us two L-Platers H & I had our 3 drives each well out of the way by the 16th so we did.  And we stood up to the 18th.  And our Honourable Gentleman Captain and his team were stood waiting for us to drive as they approached the 12th green.  And L-Plater H and I stood up, we teed up and we drove two mighty and stonking drives (chorus of “best of the day” from the Buddy and the Mc Man greeted each shot) straight down the fairway.  Lovely.  The men out drove us, but lovely anyway.  We are Ladies, don’t ye know??
