Lady L-Plater’s Golfing Journal
26-1-2010
Today is my 35th birthday – not young to many but, in golfing terms, I’m only just out of my nappies.
Today is also a Tuesday – which makes it Ladies’ Day at Garryhinch – Portarlington Golf Club – it’s a tad frosty but still potential good golfing weather so out I go. The vehicle battery is dead – an excellent start. Golfing gear into the van, lift over and I’ll store my stuff after and walk the 1 ½ miles home. Happy Bloody Birthday indeed.
It is exactly 4 years since I became a member of Garryhinch and exactly 1 year since I began playing golf (don’t ask). I would have laughed in a politely dismissive way should anyone have suggested that a year later I would still be a complete L-Plater despite the hours of golfing undertaken.
They were right…
Three of us L-Platers played today – L-Plater H, L-Plater J & me. We set off in a big ol’ 3-ball, our huge handicaps blowing in the wind and no fear in our hearts at the temporary tees, temporary greens and frosty hard fairways. The other two did admirably, as always. I was, also as always, finding the 36 just a little tight to accommodate my golfing style – hurmph.
But the course did not let us down – L-Plater H spotted a beautiful red squirrel dart across the 7th fairway and straight up a big old beech tree, where he sat and laughed at us. The splendour of the course and the wildlife within can make even bad golf almost painless.
Gotta feel better when
